This is Funaro & Camerlengo 1011 Borden Milk tank yellow. Butterdish milk tank car. Resin kit. Borden’s (yellow) with decals and trucks, less wheels and couplers. Original version Borden’s Milk tank car built using steel undeframe from wood milk cars. Kit must be painted. Borden’s introduced the Milk Tank Car in the New York metropolitan area in 1926. The Internal tank cars were a vast improvement over can carrying cars. Milk was transported from farms to creameries where it was checked for purity and then pre-cooled in large bulk tanks to 36 degrees, It was then transferred to the insulated rail cars and made the trip to the city plants. In late 1935, Borden’s created the streamline milk car which looks much like a butterdish, thus the name. At first, cars were left in the natural aluminum color or painted silver. Later colors included red, white and silver. Later cars were transferred to the chemical division and used to haul Elmer’s Glue and related products, into the early 1970’s. The kit is for serious modelers only. It comes without trucks or couplers. The model is made of special, tough resin castings that are made in hand filled molds. The material is quite flexible, unlike the hard plastic of most models. If you have only done simple snap together kits, this may not be for you.
